The salmon of Warsaw

The salmon of Warsaw

On the Orkla River in Norway, some sailors spotted a rebellious salmon that, unlike the others, was swimming against the current. The captain of the boat got scared and said it was surely one of the many reincarnations of the goddess Freya. He began reciting aloud, with a trembling voice, one of the songs that adorn the Droplaugarsona saga. Faced with his fear, some companions joined in a chorus, while others reacted with Nordic composure to the strange situation.

"This salmon won't escape me," said the sailor Eric before killing it with a homemade harpoon. There seems to have been a dispute at that moment, and the ship went down; others believe it was the waters that turned violent with the vessel.

The truth is that the crew was never heard from again. It happened so long ago that the villagers presumed them dead. On the last day of the search, a girl, Eric's daughter, was surprised to see one of the salmon in the river swimming upside down, meaning against the current.
